The long-running battle over Buganda Kingdom land just got bigger — and more serious.

The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has been fighting to reclaim properties that were taken during the 1966 crisis and later “returned” but are still occupied by government institutions.
Yesterday, the High Court in Mukono ruled that all the separate cases (involving UPDF barracks, radar centres, Bombo Military Hospital, prisons, district offices, and even Air Force schools) will now be heard together as one giant case.
The Kabaka wants the government to either pay rent, buy the land properly, or vacate. We’re talking trillions of shillings in value.
The government tried to argue the cases are too different to combine, but the judge said they all raise the same core question: Can the state keep sitting on restored kingdom land without proper agreement?
The consolidated hearing is set for April. Whatever the outcome, this will affect how traditional institutions and the central government share land in Uganda going forward.
