With Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu temporarily out of the country, the National Unity Platform has turned to Dr Lina Zedriga Abuku Waru to keep the party moving forward. A lawyer, peacebuilding specialist and longtime deputy president, she brings decades of experience to the role at a time when the opposition needs steady hands.
Born in 1961 in Arua District, Zedriga trained as a magistrate before shifting into activism and human rights work. She has lectured at universities in Uganda and the United States, earned a PhD in peace and conflict resolution, and led organisations focused on women’s leadership and community reconciliation. Her current positions include secretary of the national committee against war crimes and executive director of her own foundation that supports peace efforts in northern Uganda.
She speaks seven languages and has worked with groups ranging from the Forum for Women in Democracy to the World Bank. Her personal story also carries weight. Her husband went missing in 2001 while coordinating for opposition leader Kizza Besigye, an event that shaped her commitment to justice.
For NUP supporters, Zedriga’s appointment offers continuity and fresh energy. She understands both grassroots mobilisation and high-level advocacy, skills that could help the party build stronger alliances while Kyagulanyi rallies support from outside. In a political landscape where opposition movements often struggle during leadership gaps, her background in conflict resolution and inclusive governance could prove valuable in keeping members united and focused on the long road ahead.
