NRM MP shot in leg but survives attack in Lyantonde

Enos K Asiimwe, the newly re-elected National Resistance Movement member of parliament for Kabula County, is recovering in hospital after gunmen targeted him at a hotel in Lyantonde District on Saturday night. The legislator took a bullet to the leg during the incident at Court Yard Hotel before being rushed to International Hospital Kampala for treatment.

Details remain thin, and security agencies have yet to name suspects or spell out a clear motive. Speaker Anita Among visited him on Monday to check on his progress, while investigations continue. Asiimwe had just secured a second term in the January elections, making this the latest in a string of worrying attacks on politicians since voting ended.

The shooting highlights growing safety concerns for public figures across Uganda. With tensions still high after a tightly contested poll, many wonder whether political rivalries or other forces are behind the violence. For voters in Lyantonde and beyond, the incident raises fresh questions about how well leaders are protected and whether the country can maintain calm as new parliament sessions begin.
