In a move that reeks of opportunism amid Uganda’s political turmoil, outgoing Mawokota South MP Yusuf Nsibambi has jumped ship from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Welcomed with open arms at the NRM Secretariat by Speaker Anita Among and Secretary General Richard Todwong, Nsibambi symbolically vowed to return his FDC card, claiming the party “collapsed” after Among’s own defection. This flip-flop, just before the 2026 elections, adds fuel to the fire of opposition disarray, with Nsibambi citing “bruises” from his FDC tenure as his excuse for seeking “peace” in the NRM fold.
Yet, Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi spins this as a victory for authenticity, declaring Nsibambi’s exit rids the opposition of “pretentious characters.” Ssenyonyi emphasizes that true resistance lies with the Ugandan people, weary of corruption, poor services, and brutality—not just politicians. He references a secretive State House meeting with Museveni, where Nsibambi’s motives were questioned as self-serving, perhaps chasing jobs or debt relief after election losses.
This defection joins a pattern of opposition figures like Among, Thomas Tayebwa, and Beatrice Anywar crossing to NRM, eroding trust but potentially purifying the opposition’s ranks. For engaged Ugandans, it’s a lesson in vigilance—support genuine leaders through platforms like NUP’s channels or civic groups. As Ssenyonyi notes, the people’s anger endures, signaling that real change brews from the ground up, not party switches.
