Prison Warder Shoots Four Dead, Disappears. Now There is a Shs10 Million Reward for His Capture

Two weeks passed and Warder Anguyo Moses was still nowhere to be found. On Monday, Uganda Prisons Service raised the stakes, announcing a Shs10 million reward for anyone who provides credible information leading to his arrest. Commissioner General of Prisons Johnson Byabashaija made the announcement, and prisons spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja assured the public that all tip-offs would be handled with strict confidentiality. Anyone with information has been urged to call the toll-free lines 999 or 0800144144, or to walk into the nearest police station.

The manhunt traces back to the morning of February 23, 2026 at Kiboga Government Prison in central Uganda. At around 10 in the morning, Anguyo, a warder bearing service number 13544, reportedly turned his firearm on senior officers who had cautioned him while he was on duty. Three people died at the scene: Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, the deputy officer in charge; Principal Officer Bright Akishuri, the third in command; and Sarah Ayebare, the wife of the prison’s officer in charge. A toddler who was wounded in the shooting later succumbed at hospital, raising the death toll to four.

After the shooting, Anguyo fled the prison grounds. Security agencies launched a joint operation and recovered the firearm believed to have been used, but the warder himself slipped away. He has not been seen since.

Uganda Prisons has warned the public that Anguyo should be considered dangerous, and that anyone who spots him should alert authorities rather than approach him directly.
