Woman jailed after refusing to repay lover who funded her LDC studies

Western Uganda is buzzing over this one. Fortunate Kyarikunda, a law enforcement officer in Rubanda, got hauled off to civil prison because she wouldn’t pay back more than Shs14 million to her former partner Richard Tumwiine. He sponsored her entire Law Development Centre course years ago when they were planning marriage. She finished the diploma, then called things off, saying he was too old and the relationship stressed her out.

Tumwiine took her to court in 2023, won, and she ignored every repayment order. Arrested at work, the magistrate sent her straight to jail for up to six months or until the cash appears. Her lawyer tried the “wrong summons” excuse; court wasn’t buying it.

It’s the kind of love-money mix-up that ends with a broken heart and a prison cell. Tumwiine says he scraped the fees from salary, crops and rentals expecting a future together. Now he’s got his court win but zero romance. Harsh lesson for anyone blending romance and school fees — promises matter until the bill comes due. Kyarikunda’s behind bars, and the story has everyone in Rubanda shaking their heads
