Police officer murder case advances as five suspects face court martial

Five men now stand accused in the brutal shooting death of Assistant Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Bagenda, who led Ntawo Police Station in Mukono District. The suspects face charges of murder, aggravated robbery, and attempted murder before Uganda’s General Court Martial, a military tribunal handling serious crimes involving security forces or threats to them.

Bagenda lost his life on November 23, 2025, in what authorities describe as a cold-blooded attack that left the local police community stunned and sparked wider worries about officer safety. As the officer in charge, he handled day-to-day operations at the station, dealing with everything from routine patrols to community disputes in a growing district just outside Kampala.

The move to court martial signals how gravely the government views this killing. These tribunals often move faster than civilian courts and carry heavy penalties, including long prison terms or even death sentences for capital offenses like murder. Bringing the case here also reflects the belief that the incident targeted law enforcement in a way that could undermine public order.

For residents of Mukono, the trial offers a chance to see accountability after months of waiting. Many in the area remember Bagenda as an active leader who engaged with locals, making his death feel personal and raising questions about whether criminals are growing bolder against police. The outcome could send a strong message that attacks on officers will face swift and firm justice, potentially deterring copycat violence.

At the same time, the proceedings highlight ongoing challenges in keeping security personnel safe amid rising crime in peri-urban zones. With the suspects now formally charged, the focus shifts to evidence presentation and witness testimonies in the coming sessions. Ugandans following the story will watch closely to see if the court delivers clear answers about what happened that night and why.
