Uganda Launches Major Upgrades at Seven Sites to Prepare for Co-Hosting AFCON 2027

Work has officially begun on upgrading seven key venues across Uganda as the country gets ready to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces Engineering Brigade is leading the effort, and the first handover ceremony took place at Makerere University. Sports State Minister Peter Ogwang stood in for Education and Sports Minister Janet Museveni to launch the project. The plan turns the university grounds into a full multi-sport complex complete with a football pitch, athletics track, and courts for volleyball, netball, and basketball.

Other locations receiving attention include Lira University, Pece Stadium in Gulu, Kyambogo University Phase Two, Hoima Booma Grounds, Masindi Municipal Council Stadium, and Gulu University. All seven sites fall under the supervision of Lt. Col. Peter Sseku Kidemuka, with the entire project scheduled for completion in just eight months.

The investments are significant and targeted. Kyambogo University’s upgrade alone carries a Shs 19 billion budget and will add tennis and basketball courts plus a pavilion. Several other sites, including Hoima, Gulu, Lira, Sir Tito Winyi, and Pece Stadium, are budgeted at Shs 13.2 billion each. Masindi Stadium, which will also gain an athletics track, comes in at Shs 20.2 billion.

Every venue will receive hybrid turf, the same high-standard surface already in place at Namboole and Kyambogo, to meet Confederation of African Football requirements. These upgrades go well beyond football. Local communities will gain modern facilities for everyday sports and events long after the tournament ends.

Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will stage the tournament in June and July 2027, returning the competition to its traditional mid-year slot. After this edition, AFCON will move to a four-year cycle starting in 2028. For Uganda, these preparations represent more than just hosting rights. They are an investment in youth development, infrastructure, and national pride. Fans and athletes alike can look forward to better training grounds and a tournament that leaves a lasting legacy across the region.
