Ottawa, Canada – The Canadian government has officially rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent suggestion to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” calling the idea “unilateral, disrespectful, and contrary to the spirit of cross‑border cooperation.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office released a statement asserting that the lake, which straddles the Canada‑U.S. border, holds historical and cultural significance for both nations. “Lake Ontario is a shared natural treasure. Any attempt to rename it without bilateral consultation undermines the mutual respect that defines our relationship,” the statement read.
Canadian officials also reminded the public that the lake’s name dates back to the 17th‑century French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who named it after the Iroquoian word “Ontarí:io,” meaning “great lake.”
In response, U.S. officials indicated that the proposal was made in a personal capacity and does not reflect official U.S. policy. Meanwhile, environmental groups on both sides of the border have called for renewed joint stewardship of the lake’s ecosystem, emphasizing that its health, not its name, should be the priority.
