NUP Lawyer Freed After Tense Interrogation on Bobi Wine’s Whereabouts

In the midst of Uganda’s escalating political drama, a NUP lawyer was briefly detained and grilled by authorities about the hiding spot of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine. The incident unfolded when a team of NUP lawyers and officials, including John Baptist Nambeshe, tried to visit Bobi Wine’s besieged home in Magere. Blocked by heavy security, the group faced resistance, leading to the arrest of lawyer Tumusiime Kakuru, who was bundled into a van and taken to Kasangati police station.

Kakuru was released on bond later that evening, charged with public nuisance, but not before being questioned intensely about Bobi Wine’s location and post-election plans. This comes as Bobi Wine marks a month in hiding, claiming threats from the military. The raid on MP Patrick Nsanja’s home earlier, searching for the NUP president, adds to the sense of a widespread hunt.

For those tracking Uganda’s opposition struggles, this event illustrates the shrinking space for dissent, with several NUP deputies already facing charges. It raises questions about freedom of movement and legal access. Readers can support by following verified updates from NUP channels or donating to legal aid funds. As Kakuru himself noted, the focus on Bobi’s whereabouts distracts from addressing real electoral injustices let’s hope for a resolution that prioritizes dialogue over detentions.
