Yesterday, Ekiti State in Nigeria inaugurated a Public Health Emergency Operations Centre Steering Committee to strengthen health security and tackle cholera, Lassa fever, and other outbreaks. This development is significant for Uganda, given the country's own struggles with disease outbreaks. The committee's establishment demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing public health concerns, which is essential in preventing and responding to epidemics. Uganda can draw lessons from Ekiti State's initiative, particularly in terms of enhancing its own emergency response mechanisms. By studying the Nigerian state's strategies, Uganda can improve its capacity to detect and respond to outbreaks, ultimately saving lives and reducing the economic burden of diseases. As Uganda continues to navigate its own health challenges, the Ekiti State model serves as a valuable example of effective health governance.
