After nearly half a century in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Katumba Wamala officially retired on Monday, ending a 47‑year military career that saw him rise from a junior officer to one of the army’s most senior commanders. President Yoweri Museveni led a ceremony at the National Defence College, praising Wamala’s “unwavering dedication” and “strategic brilliance” in several key operations, including the 2006 Operation Lightning. In his farewell address, Wamala thanked his fellow soldiers and urged the next generation to uphold the values of discipline and patriotism. The retirement comes as the UPDF undergoes a broader restructuring, with several other senior officers slated for promotion.
