Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of war crimes and genocide during the 1990s conflict, died on Saturday at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence at a prison in The Hague. Mladic, known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” was sentenced in 2017 for his role in the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) confirmed that Mladic had been suffering from a series of health complications, including heart disease and chronic respiratory issues, which ultimately led to his death.
Human rights groups issued statements reflecting on the significance of his death, noting that while the passing of a convicted war criminal does not erase the suffering endured by victims, it underscores the importance of continued accountability and remembrance. “Justice was served through a fair trial and a sentence that reflected the gravity of his crimes,” said a spokesperson for the International Center for Transitional Justice.
Mladic’s death will close a chapter in the post‑war reconciliation process in the Balkans, though many survivors and families of victims continue to seek closure and reparations.
