Trump Administration Seeks to End Tax Exemptions for Private Colleges That Adopt DEI Policies

In a move that has sparked debate across higher‑education circles, the Trump administration announced a proposal to revoke the federal tax‑exempt status of private colleges that implement Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. The Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education argues that DEI initiatives constitute political activity, violating the Internal Revenue Code’s requirement for nonprofit status. Critics, including university presidents and civil‑rights groups, contend the policy threatens academic freedom and could force institutions to cut scholarships, research funding and staff positions. A public comment period will run for 60 days before the proposal is finalized.
