NIRA Stuck with 4.5 Million Uncollected National IDs, Raising Concerns Over Administrative Efficiency

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) disclosed that approximately 4.5 million national identity cards remain uncollected across the nation, a figure that has sparked criticism from civil society and opposition lawmakers. According to NIRA’s latest report, the backlog stems from a combination of logistical challenges, inadequate public awareness campaigns, and a surge in applications following the recent biometric upgrade. The agency has pledged to launch mobile collection units and extend office hours in rural districts to address the shortfall. However, experts warn that without a robust tracking system, the unclaimed IDs could become a security risk, potentially facilitating identity fraud and hindering access to essential services.
