Kampala – The Ministry of Health has tasked 134 Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) in Buikwe District with a dual mandate: intensify cancer prevention outreach and establish a real‑time community death reporting system. The initiative, part of the national Non‑Communicable Diseases (NCD) strategy, equips CHEWs with mobile health apps to record cancer screening referrals, educate residents on lifestyle risk factors, and log mortality events within 24 hours of occurrence. District Health Officer Dr. Grace Nanyanzi emphasized that early detection and accurate death data are critical for shaping effective health policies. The program will be monitored by the Ministry’s Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, with quarterly performance reviews slated to begin in January 2025.
