Uganda’s Parliament has formed a special committee to probe the Shs11.3 trillion (approximately $3.1 billion) cost‑recovery claims submitted by multinational oil companies operating in the Albertine Graben. The committee, chaired by MP Grace Nambatya, will examine contracts, audit financial statements, and interview senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and the involved oil firms. The inquiry comes after civil society groups raised concerns that the cost‑recovery mechanism, introduced in the 2013 Production Sharing Agreement, may be inflating the government’s fiscal obligations and jeopardising the country’s projected oil revenue. The committee is expected to submit a preliminary report within 90 days, with recommendations on possible renegotiations or stricter oversight mechanisms.
