Greetings From Beijing: Baozi Worth the Wait in Line as City’s Street Food Scene Booms

Travelers to Beijing this autumn report that waiting in line for freshly steamed baozi has become a cultural ritual. Vendors in the historic Wangfujing market report a 45 percent surge in customers since the start of the year, attributing the boom to a renewed interest in traditional snacks among younger diners. The soft‑filled buns, often stuffed with pork, vegetables, or sweet red bean paste, are praised for their airy dough and flavorful fillings. Local chef Li Wei says the long queues are a sign of “pride in craftsmanship,” and city officials are considering protective measures to preserve the heritage of these beloved street foods amid rapid urban development.
