Kampala – In a press conference on Monday, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) chief executive, Doris Akol, praised Ugandan real‑estate magnate Sudhir K. Patel for his exemplary tax record and called on landlords across the country to follow his lead. Patel, whose portfolio includes more than 2,000 residential units, has consistently filed rental tax returns on time and has voluntarily disclosed previously undeclared income, resulting in a settlement of UGX 150 billion in back taxes. Akol highlighted the URA’s new “Rental Tax Compliance Initiative,” which will roll out a digital filing platform, targeted outreach to informal landlords, and a tiered penalty system for repeat offenders. The URA aims to increase rental tax collection by 30 % over the next two years, citing the sector’s contribution of UGX 1.2 trillion to the national budget in 2023. Patel’s compliance story will be featured in a series of case‑study videos to be broadcast on national television and shared on social media to encourage wider adoption of best practices.
