Investigative Report Suggests Syrian Regime Planned Kidnapping of American Journalist for Weeks

A joint investigation by several international watchdog groups, citing sources within Syrian intelligence circles and leaked communications, alleges that the Syrian government orchestrated a prolonged plan to abduct an American journalist covering the conflict in Idlib province. According to the report, the plot was allegedly conceived in early 2023 and involved coordination between multiple security agencies, with the intent to leverage the journalist as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Western governments. The journalist, who has not been named for safety reasons, was ultimately rescued by a coalition of local allies in March 2024 after a last‑minute warning from a defected Syrian officer. Human rights organizations have called for an independent inquiry and for the Syrian regime to be held accountable for violations of international law.
