The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) announced a suspension of all joint training exercises, equipment transfers, and intelligence sharing with the Turkish Armed Forces, effective immediately. The decision follows a series of diplomatic rows over alleged involvement of Turkish private security firms in the eastern region’s conflict and concerns about the procurement of Turkish‑made drones. UPDF spokesperson Major General James Okwiri stated that the suspension is a “protective measure to safeguard national security interests.” Kampala has called for a high‑level dialogue with Ankara to resolve the issues, while Turkey’s embassy in Kampala has urged both sides to “maintain open channels of communication.”
