Former Makerere University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, has called for an investigation into allegations of excessive expenditure by the Parliament of Uganda. Specifically, Professor Baryamureeba is demanding that the current Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, and the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, be investigated over claims of misusing parliamentary funds. The professor’s demands come after a series of reports highlighted the lavish spending of parliamentarians, which has sparked widespread outrage among the Ugandan public. According to Professor Baryamureeba, the investigation should focus on the procurement processes and the alleged misuse of funds meant for parliamentary activities. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources, stating that the Parliament’s expenditure claims must be thoroughly examined to ensure that taxpayers’ money is being utilized efficiently. The call for investigation has been welcomed by various civil society organizations, which have long been advocating for greater transparency in the management of public finances in Uganda. As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the authorities will heed Professor Baryamureeba’s call and launch a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
