The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) unveiled a comprehensive $994 million plan to modernize the nation’s power distribution network. The multi‑year project, slated to begin in Q4 2026, will replace aging transformers, upgrade low‑voltage lines, and introduce smart‑grid technology in 12 of the most outage‑prone districts. According to UEDCL’s CEO, Grace Nanyanzi, the overhaul aims to reduce average outage duration from 5.2 hours per month to under one hour by 2030. Funding will be sourced from a blend of government allocations, a World Bank loan, and private sector partnerships. The initiative also includes a community outreach program to train local technicians, creating an estimated 3,500 jobs during the construction phase.
