Milk bars, the ubiquitous roadside stalls serving fresh dairy drinks, remain a cultural staple across Rwanda, drawing crowds from Kigali to rural provinces. While the establishments are praised for supporting local dairy farmers, Health Minister Dr. Jeanne Mukamana warned that excessive consumption could contribute to rising rates of obesity and hypertension. In a televised address, the minister called for balanced diets and suggested that patrons limit sugary additives often mixed into the milk. Dairy cooperatives responded by promoting low‑fat and unsweetened options, hoping to preserve the beloved tradition while addressing public‑health concerns.
