Ugandan Opposition Leaders Besigye and Lukwago Too Ill to Meet President Gen. Saleh

Veteran opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and Kampala mayor Erias Lukwago were forced to cancel a scheduled meeting with President General Salim Saleh after both reported severe flu‑like symptoms. Sources close to the two politicians said they are recovering at home and expect to resume political activities within a week.

The meeting, which was to discuss electoral reforms and the upcoming local elections, had been billed as a rare opportunity for dialogue between the ruling establishment and the fragmented opposition. Analysts noted that the postponement could delay critical negotiations on voter registration and media access, further heightening tensions ahead of the national polls.
