I Learnt About King Oyo’s Cancer Illness Last Year – Museveni

Kampala – In a rare televised interview, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni disclosed that he first learned of the late King Oyo’s battle with cancer in 2022, a revelation that has sparked renewed interest in the former monarch’s health struggles and the political implications of his death.

The former king of the Oyo Empire, who passed away in August 2024 after a prolonged illness, had kept his diagnosis largely private, leading to speculation and rumors across West Africa. Museveni, speaking to the national broadcaster NTV, said, “I was informed by a trusted colleague in the health ministry about King Oyo’s condition last year. It was a personal matter, but the impact on regional stability was evident.”

Political analysts note that Museveni’s admission may be an attempt to position Uganda as a supportive ally to the Oyo region during a period of transition. “By acknowledging his knowledge of the king’s illness, Musević is signalling diplomatic solidarity,” said Dr. Grace Nanyanzi, a professor of African studies at Makerere University.

The interview also touched on broader health concerns in the region, with Museveni urging African leaders to invest more in cancer screening and treatment infrastructure. “Our people deserve early detection and access to care,” he said, calling for a continental health summit later this year.

King Oyo’s death has prompted a succession debate among the Oyo royal family, with several claimants emerging. The Ugandan president’s comments are expected to influence the diplomatic tone of upcoming discussions in Lagos and Abuja.
