London – After nearly ten months in pre‑trial detention, high‑profile socialite Bryan White was released on bail on Tuesday following a magistrate’s decision that his continued remand was unlawful. White, 38, had been held without a committal hearing, a procedural oversight that prompted criticism from civil‑rights groups and legal experts.
The bail package includes a £150,000 cash bond, a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and a requirement to surrender his passport. White’s legal team argued that the prolonged detention violated his right to a speedy trial under the European Convention on Human Rights. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it would review the case and consider whether to proceed with charges related to alleged financial misconduct and alleged assault at a private party in May 2022.
Human rights lawyer Amelia Clarke said the case highlights a broader issue of “remand creep” in the UK justice system, where defendants can be held for extended periods without formal charges. “We hope this decision sends a clear message that the courts must enforce procedural safeguards,” she added.
White, who is known for his appearances on reality TV and his philanthropic work, issued a brief statement through his publicist, thanking the court and pledging to “cooperate fully with the legal process.” The next hearing is scheduled for 15 November.
