Masaka Farmers Count Losses as Four‑Month Drought Ravages Crops

Farmers in Uganda’s Masaka district are facing a severe crisis after a relentless four‑month drought decimated staple crops such as maize, beans, and millet. The Uganda Meteorological Authority confirmed that rainfall levels were 78 % below average during the period, leading to wilting fields and failed harvests. Local cooperative leader, James Kintu, estimated that the total loss could exceed 1.2 million UGX per household, pushing many families toward food insecurity. Aid agencies have begun distributing emergency grain rations, while the Ministry of Agriculture is exploring drought‑resistant seed programs and irrigation projects to mitigate future risks.
