Kampala – The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Chris Obore, a former senior parliamentary clerk, who is one of three individuals charged in the Shs27 billion (approximately $7.5 million) corruption case involving the misappropriation of funds earmarked for parliamentary infrastructure. The bail package, set at Shs5 million with two sureties, was approved after Obore’s legal team argued that he poses no flight risk and is cooperating with investigators. The scandal, which erupted last year, alleged that Obore and two other officials colluded with private contractors to inflate project costs for the renovation of the Parliament’s main chamber. Prosecutors warned that the bail decision does not equate to acquittal and that the trial, slated for early next year, will proceed with full vigor. Civil society groups welcomed the ruling, calling for swift justice and a thorough audit of parliamentary expenditures.
