Kampala – The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives signed a landmark agreement with South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Monday, securing a yearly export quota of 3,500 metric tonnes of premium Ugandan Arabica coffee to the port of Busan. The deal, valued at approximately $45 million, is part of Uganda’s strategy to diversify its agricultural exports beyond traditional markets in Europe and the Middle East. Ugandan coffee growers will benefit from a guaranteed price floor and technical assistance from Korean agronomists to improve bean quality. The agreement also includes a joint research program on climate‑resilient coffee varieties and a scholarship scheme for Ugandan agronomy students to study in Seoul. Trade officials expect the partnership to create up to 2,000 new jobs in the coffee value chain over the next five years.
