KAMPALA – The historic Tooro Kingdom is facing its most serious internal crisis in decades after the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret Bunyoro, publicly disputed the coronation of her son, King Oyo Nyabongo, citing alleged irregularities in the selection process. Traditional council elders convened an emergency meeting in Fort Portal, where they heard claims that the late King Oyo’s appointment was influenced by external political actors and that proper rites were not observed. The Queen Mother has called for a transparent review by the Kingdom’s Council of Elders and the Ministry of Culture, warning that the dispute could destabilise the kingdom’s unity and its relationship with the Ugandan government. While supporters of the new king argue that the succession follows the kingdom’s constitutional provisions, opposition factions have organized peaceful protests demanding a re‑examination of the process. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has pledged to monitor the situation closely to prevent any escalation into violence.
