The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) issued a statement on Monday suspending all forms of military cooperation with the Republic of Turkey, citing “unacceptable diplomatic conduct” and “concerns over regional security dynamics.” The decision follows a series of reported incidents involving Turkish private security contractors operating near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, which the UPDF says violated Uganda’s sovereignty. Defence Minister General James Mugisha emphasized that the suspension is a “temporary measure pending a thorough review” and called for “respectful dialogue” to resolve the issues. Turkey’s embassy in Kampala has expressed disappointment but indicated willingness to discuss the matter through diplomatic channels.
