The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has mandated that major social media companies provide users with a clear option to disable algorithmic content curation and revert to a chronological feed. The regulation, set to take effect in early 2025, aims to give Australians greater control over the information they see online and to address concerns about echo chambers and misinformation. Platforms such as Meta, TikTok, and X will need to redesign their user interfaces to include an easily accessible toggle for the “chronological view.” Consumer advocacy groups have praised the move, calling it a step toward greater transparency and digital wellbeing.
