Capital FM Takeover Faces UCC Public Scrutiny Over Media Ownership Rules

The proposed acquisition of Capital FM by Global Media Holdings has drawn intense scrutiny from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Regulators are reviewing the deal to ensure compliance with the country’s media ownership limits and to assess potential impacts on editorial independence. Consumer groups have voiced concerns that the takeover could concentrate too much influence in the hands of a single conglomerate, potentially marginalising local voices. The UCC has scheduled a public hearing for next week, inviting stakeholders to submit comments. If the commission finds violations, the deal could be delayed or blocked, prompting Global Media to consider restructuring the transaction to meet regulatory standards.
