A Lagos federal court ruled on Monday that FBW Construction Ltd. and senior architects Chinedu Okonkwo and Aisha Bello must jointly pay plaintiff Meera Nwankwo a total of ₦300 million (approximately $741,000) for breach of contract and negligence on the Kabira residential development.
The dispute began in 2021 when Meera, a private investor, hired FBW to deliver a mixed‑use complex in the Kabira district of Lagos. According to the judgment, the architects failed to adhere to approved design specifications, resulting in structural deficiencies that forced Meera to halt construction and incur significant remediation costs.
Judge Olufemi Adebayo described the conduct as “a flagrant disregard for professional standards and contractual obligations,” ordering the defendants to cover both the direct losses and punitive damages. FBW’s legal team announced plans to appeal, citing “unforeseen site conditions” and claiming the court misinterpreted the contract clauses.
Legal analysts say the verdict could set a precedent for holding design professionals financially accountable in Nigeria’s booming construction sector.
