Speaking at a high‑level fiscal responsibility conference held at the Speke Resort in Munyonyo, Finance Minister Ruth Nankabirwa warned accounting officers across ministries and local governments that any form of corruption or budget abuse would be met with zero tolerance. The minister highlighted recent audit reports showing recurring irregularities in procurement and expense claims, urging officials to adhere strictly to the Public Finance Management Act.
“We cannot afford to waste the nation’s resources,” Nankabirwa said. She announced the launch of a new digital tracking system for budget execution, which will provide real‑time visibility of expenditures and flag anomalies automatically. The minister also announced increased training for accounting officers on ethical standards and the upcoming rollout of a whistle‑blower protection framework to encourage reporting of misconduct.
The conference concluded with a pledge from the Ministry of Finance to conduct surprise audits in the next fiscal year and to impose sanctions, including dismissal and prosecution, on any officer found guilty of misappropriation.
