The Uganda Immigration Department reported that total arrests for illegal entry, document fraud, and human trafficking reached 50,000 in July, a 22 percent increase from June. The surge follows a nationwide operation that deployed additional border patrol units and introduced biometric verification at all major entry points. Director General James Okwiri noted, “We are intensifying our efforts to protect our borders and dismantle smuggling networks.” Critics, however, have raised concerns about the treatment of detainees and called for greater oversight of the department’s enforcement tactics.
