The Philadelphia Historical Commission voted unanimously to designate the former residence of saxophonist John Coltrane at 1518 West Girard Avenue as a protected cultural heritage site. The modest row house, where Coltrane lived from 1960 to 1965, served as a creative hub for his groundbreaking recordings, including “My Favorite Things” and “A Love Supreme.”
Preservationists plan to restore the interior to its 1960s appearance and open the space to the public as a museum and performance venue. “Coltrane’s music reshaped American culture,” said commission chairwoman Dr. Maya Patel. “Preserving his home ensures future generations can experience the environment that nurtured his genius.”
Funding for the project will come from a combination of city grants, private donations, and a $2 million endowment from the National Jazz Foundation.
