Kiboga, Uganda – In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, the Kiboga High Court sentenced former prison warder John Anguyo to death after finding him guilty of the pre‑meditated murder of four inmates at Kiboga Central Prison in 2022. The court heard that Anguyo, who was on duty during the night of the killings, allegedly ordered the killings to silence a suspected gang leader among the prisoners. The prosecution presented forensic evidence linking Anguyo’s fingerprints to the murder weapons and testimony from surviving inmates. Defense counsel argued for a reduced sentence, citing Anguyo’s alleged mental health issues, but the judge rejected the plea, stating that “the gravity of the crime and the breach of trust placed upon a prison officer demand the maximum penalty under Ugandan law.” Anguyo’s legal team has indicated they will appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court within the constitutionally mandated 30‑day period.
