Masaka Farmers Count Losses as Four‑Month Drought Devastates Crops

In Uganda’s Masaka District, farmers are grappling with the aftermath of a relentless four‑month drought that has left fields barren and food supplies dwindling. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that over 12,000 hectares of maize, beans, and millet have been lost, threatening the livelihoods of roughly 45,000 residents. Community leader Peter Nsubuga described the situation as “a humanitarian crisis waiting to happen,” as families struggle to secure enough food for the upcoming harvest season. Aid agencies have begun distributing emergency grain rations, while the government is fast‑tracking irrigation projects and requesting international assistance to mitigate the impact of climate‑related shocks.
