Masaka Farmers Report Devastating Losses After Four‑Month Drought Ravages Crops

In Uganda’s Masaka District, farmers are grappling with severe economic hardship after a prolonged four‑month drought decimated staple crops such as maize, beans, and sweet potatoes. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that up to 75 % of the region’s 12,000 hectares of arable land suffered significant yield loss, leaving an estimated 45,000 families facing food insecurity. Community leader Samuel Kato warned that “without immediate relief, many households will be forced to sell livestock or migrate to urban areas.” International aid agencies have pledged emergency food assistance, while the government is fast‑tracking irrigation projects and drought‑resistant seed distribution to mitigate future crises.
