Critics had labeled the award a “political patronage” scheme that would strain the nation’s already tight budget. The motion, led by opposition MPs, passed with a majority of 210 votes. Finance Minister Matia Kasaija said the funds will be reallocated to health and education programs, while the ruling party warned that the removal could demotivate high‑performing public officials. The decision is expected to be reflected in the final budget to be presented later this month.
