Kampala – In a rare public disclosure, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni told reporters that he first learned of King Oyo’s battle with cancer in 2023. The Ugandan monarch, who has been a symbolic figurehead for the Oyo people in Nigeria, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma. Museveni, who maintains close diplomatic ties with the Oyo Kingdom, said the news came through a confidential channel and that he has been following the king’s treatment closely. “I was saddened when I heard about his illness. My thoughts and prayers are with His Majesty and his family,” the president said. The statement has prompted renewed calls for regional health cooperation and increased support for cancer care in West Africa.
