President Museveni Unveils ‘Pearl Sweet’ as Uganda’s Official Crude Oil Brand

Kampala – In a ceremony at the National Oil Company of Uganda (NOCU) headquarters, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially launched “Pearl Sweet,” the nation’s first branded crude oil intended for export to global markets. The branding effort is part of a broader strategy to position Uganda as a premium oil producer and to attract foreign investment in downstream processing. “Pearl Sweet” reflects the high‑quality, low‑sulphur content of Uganda’s Albertine Graben crude, which meets the specifications of major refineries in Europe and Asia. The President emphasized that the brand will be marketed through a new digital platform that tracks shipments, ensures transparency, and showcases Uganda’s commitment to sustainable extraction practices. The launch coincides with the signing of a $2.5 billion joint venture agreement with a consortium of Chinese and European firms to develop a refinery in Hoima.
