The Voices of Sept. 11: “My First Thought Was … I Can’t Believe That I Survived”

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, survivors and first‑responders continue to grapple with the trauma of that day. In a series of recorded testimonies released by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, individuals recount the moment the towers fell and the flood of emotions that followed.

“My first thought was… I can’t believe that I survived,” says Maria Alvarez, a former flight attendant who was on a plane diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. “I looked out the window and saw the smoke, and I just knew my life would never be the same.”

Firefighter James O’Leary, who entered the North Tower’s stairwell, describes the chaos: “Every floor was a hallway of strangers, all trying to find a way out. The heat, the dust—it was like walking through a nightmare.”

These personal accounts, paired with newly declassified documents, shed light on the human resilience that emerged from the tragedy and underscore the ongoing need for mental‑health support for those still haunted by the events of that fateful morning.
