U.S. Imposes 50% Tariffs on  Billion Worth of Canadian Products

Washington – In a surprise move, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced on Thursday a 50 percent tariff on approximately $20 billion of Canadian imports, citing “unfair trade practices” and alleged violations of intellectual‑property rights. The tariff slate covers a broad range of goods, including lumber, aluminum, automotive parts, and certain agricultural products. Canadian officials responded with a statement calling the measure “unjustified and detrimental to the North American trade relationship,” and signaled intent to bring the dispute before the World Trade Organization. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo defended the action, saying it is intended to protect American manufacturers and enforce compliance with existing trade agreements. Analysts predict the tariffs could raise consumer prices in both countries and strain the long‑standing Canada‑U.S. trade partnership, potentially prompting retaliatory measures from Ottawa.
