Washington, D.C. – The United States and Denmark have finalized an agreement that will allow the U.S. to establish a permanent military installation on Greenland’s strategic western coast. The deal, signed by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, outlines a joint framework for constructing a forward operating base near the town of Ilulissat, aimed at enhancing Arctic surveillance and deterrence capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions. The agreement includes provisions for shared infrastructure, environmental impact assessments, and a commitment to respect Greenlandic autonomy. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the partnership will bring economic benefits and security guarantees to the island, while U.S. officials highlighted the base’s role in monitoring Russian activity in the Arctic.
