Uganda’s military is reeling from a massive fuel procurement scandal that has implicated senior officers. An internal audit revealed that over 12 million liters of diesel intended for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) were siphoned off through fictitious contracts, causing a shortfall that forced several bases to curtail operations. Brigadier Moses Bakahumura, head of logistics, was placed on administrative leave pending investigation, while Lieutenant General James Kandiho, the army’s chief of intelligence, has been accused of presenting fabricated intelligence reports to conceal the irregularities. Opposition parties have called for a parliamentary inquiry, and President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the anti‑corruption bureau to fast‑track prosecutions.
