The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) announced the immediate suspension of all joint training exercises, equipment transfers, and intelligence sharing with the Turkish Armed Forces. The decision follows a series of diplomatic tensions sparked by Turkey’s recent statements supporting opposition groups in the Great Lakes region. Colonel General James Mugisha, spokesperson for the UPDF, said the suspension was a “necessary measure to protect national sovereignty and regional stability.” Ankara has yet to respond publicly, but sources close to the Turkish Ministry of Defense indicate that negotiations are underway to resolve the dispute. The move has drawn mixed reactions from regional partners, with the African Union urging both sides to seek a peaceful resolution.
