Nairobi – The measles epidemic that swept through Kenya in March 2025, infecting over 150,000 children and claiming more than 2,000 lives, appears to be largely under control as of September 2026. The Ministry of Health reports that new cases have dropped to fewer than 50 per month, a stark contrast to the peak of 5,200 weekly infections recorded in April 2025. The decline is attributed to a massive vaccination campaign that reached 9.8 million children, supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the World Health Organization. However, health officials warn that immunity gaps remain in remote regions, and they are urging continued surveillance and booster campaigns to prevent a resurgence. The outbreak has also prompted a legislative push to make measles vaccination mandatory for school enrollment, a measure currently under parliamentary debate.
